Education Project in Laos
Purpose/Goal/Mission: The goal of the project is to support education in Laos through scholarships, English classes, and other necessary supplies/materials needed for education.
Description of program:
LHF will provide online English classes to students in Laos with teacher volunteers. LHF will provide scholarships to students who are part of the English classes and are studying in higher education (college, university, or trade school). We launched the online English learning program with several orphanage schools (SOS Herman Gmeiner School of Luang Prabang, the Orphanage School of Luang Prabang, and other SOS branches from other provinces in Laos, including Xieng Khouang and Pakse) in November of 2023. Currently we have over 60 students enrolled in the program with about 20-25 students who are active consistently.
Scholarship qualification/eligibility
- Must attend a college/university/trade school in Laos
- Must be enroll in the English program with LHF. Must be part of an Orphanage in Laos
Keeping Scholarship
- Must continue English classes
- Attend at least 4 sessions per month
Monthly Cycle
Scholarships are sent to one trusted student via Moneygram by the last day of each month. Students who attend at least 4 sessions that month are eligible to receive the scholarship.
Annual Cycle
Each year, by September 15, the scholarship committee should have selected the scholarship recipients. In each cycle, scholarships are disbursed on October 1st of every year through September 31 of the following year.
Annual Budget: It costs $50 per month to support one student- year round would total $600 per year. For the 2023-2024 school year, there are seven students, costing $4,200 for scholarships, plus supplies and materials, for a total of about $5,000.
In each successive year, if we were to add more scholarship recipients, the budget will continue to grow, depending on how many additional students the scholarship committee decides to add. This will depend on the funds raised in that year.
Volunteer Teachers: Classes are taught online via Facebook Message. LHF creates and maintains the schedules for all of the sessions with the use of google calendar. LHF currently has 25 tutors or volunteer teachers who provide the lessons to the students. Each teacher is trained and completes an onboarding process prior to teaching. LHF matches students to volunteers based on the skill level of both the student and volunteer. LHF sets up all of the classes and monitors student growth and progress through teacher logs after each lesson. Most of the students enrolled in the LHF’s English programs are orphans.
